LIFE OF DAVID – Part 2

David, the man κατὰ God’s own heart

 

A.   Panoramic View of David’s Life (Psa 78:70-72).

 

            1.   From birth to thirty:  Triumph!!!!

 

                        a.    Shepherd.

 

                        b.   Goliath.

 

                        c.   Fugitive testing years.

 

                        d.   King. 

 

            2.    From 30 to 70:   Tragedy and recovery.

 

                        a.   Bathsheba, 2 Sam 12:1-5, Job 31:1; Prov 28:13.

 

                        b.   Trouble under the law of volitional responsibility, Gal 6:7.

 

                        c.     Recovery, Psa 32; 51; 2 Sam 12; 1 Jn 1:9.

 

B.   David’s advance from logistical grace to supergrace vividly illustrates that the POG is all about living and advancing in God’s grace – and has NOTHING to do with any  merit in or ability of man, 1 Cor 1:26-29.

            1.   The POG does not depend upon human wisdom, 1 Cor 1:26.

            2.   The POG does not depend upon human strength, 1 Cor 1:26.

            3.   The POG does not depend upon the nobility of man, 1 Cor 1:26.

            4.   The POG gives wisdom to the foolish, 1:27

            5.   The POG gives strength to the weak, 1:27.

            6.   The POG gives dignity to the debased, 1:28.

            7.   The POG gives glory to the despised, 1:28;

            8.   The POG excludes all human merit and all human, 1:29.

            9.   The POG excludes all human boasting, 1:31.

            10.   Only in spiritual maturity do we really move into areas of  supergrace blessing that are beyond all what we can ask, imagine, 1 Cor 2:9; Eph 3:20.

            11.   It really is all about gaining the mind of Christ, i.e. having a heart like God’s, 1 Cor 2:16; 3:18; Eph 4:12-16.

 

C.    David, a man κατὰ God’s own heart.

 

            1.   What does it mean to be a man κατὰ God’s own heart? Acts 13:22; 1 Sam 13:14; 16:7.

 

            2.   David’s heart for BD, Psalms 1; 19.

 

            3.   David’s heart for fellowship with God, Psalms 23; 37:4; 1 Sam 13:14; 2 Chron 16:9.

 

            4.   David’s heart for sanctification, Psa. 23:1-3; 27:4.

 

            5.   David’s heart of patience regarding the POG, Psalm 37.   

 

            6.   David’s heart of humility,  Psa. 78:70; 89:19-21; 1 Sam 17:17-19.

 

            7.   David’s heart of integrity, Psa. 78:72. 

 

            8.   David’s heart had capacity for solitude.

 

            9.   David’s heart had capacity for obscurity, cf. 1 Sam 17:28-29.

 

            10.   David’s heart had capacity for monotony.

 

            11.   David’s heart of courage, 1 Sam 17:33-37. 

 

            12.   David’s faithful heart.  

 

            13.   David’s heart had capacity for promotion.

 

            14.   David’s heart had capacity for humble service, 1 Sam 17:17-19.

 

            15.   David’s heart was full of faith, Psa 37:3-5;  1 Sam 17:34-37, 47.

 

            16.   David’s heart was oriented to authority.  

 

            17.   David’s heart was one of contentment.
